How Does It Work?

Quolus’ business model is similar to that of a day labour company in that our workers are at the direction of your site supervision. Where we differ is Quolus will send the staff you’ll want and need for the efficient execution of your project, no matter what stage of construction you are in. The continuity we provide means your site supervisors spend less time repeating themselves with a revolving crew and more time on the task at hand. Your office will only have to process one biweekly timesheet with invoice, and Quolus will handle all the hiring processes, payroll submissions, and assemble the team you want for your job site. We will work closely with your site staff to ensure your current and future site needs are met.

What makes your employee’s different?

We have been at this business twenty years and have developed a large workforce with many years at Quolus. We have been able to develop and retain our veteran crew by treating them fairly, valuing their contributions, and providing the continuity and benefits that allow our employees job satisfaction. Our clients are genuinely appreciative of the good work of our crew, as are we.

How do you ensure continuity?

It is up to the superintendent to say when the job is complete. Until then, we do not interrupt the site with needless personnel switches.

What happens when you have to hire new?

Our most successful hires come from our deep network of referrals in our industry. In addition, we reach a broad selection of new trades’ people through our web site. Qualified applicants are then interviewed, references are checked, and the successful are given our safety orientation based on their position. We do our best, but if our person doesn’t measure up for any reason, send them away within four hours and there is no charge.

What’s the cost?

At Quolus, we know our business and understand the need to compete in the existing marketplace. By avoiding the day labour market we are able to do away with all the local offices and the staffing required for operating those hiring halls. We keep the overhead low, take less for ourselves and leave more money for the crew. You’ll find our costs very competitive with the competition.

How can you operate a lean and large business?

We have integrated our hiring, scheduling, safety, employee, site, and administration processes and moved them securely online, allowing us to simplify our procedures, eliminate redundancies, and greatly increase our efficiencies. In doing so, we have created a multiple mobile office network. We are more productive than ever before, and can now offer our business to a few new clients to take greater advantage of the economies of scale and to carefully grow our workforce.

Do you work for homeowners?

No, our systems are structured for developers and general contractors only.

Are you worried that others might copy your business model?

No. We must compete every day to keep our clientele and the steps we have taken only improve our service. Besides, why offer the most value to our clients and employees and not tell anyone about it?

What if we want to hire your employees directly?

Many of our employees have gone on to supervisory positions with our clients and it is a point of pride that they do. It is a true win/win/win scenario. We will not stand in the way of their advancement or put a price on it either. However, it is our business to provide a quality workforce for our clients  and also wish to retain our employees. We do feel we do a good job of providing a positive, stable work environment for our crew and only encourage them to accept positions that truly reflect career advancement. In any case, we ask our clients to take at least three months and thoroughly evaluate the situation  before making any offers.

Why does this business model work?

From our clients’ perspective, Quolus smoothes out the bumps and reduces costs on your overall site labour budget. The office doesn’t have to conduct interviews, process a payroll, submit payroll taxes, file T4’s or R.O.E.’s, or include tradesmen and labourers in their Worksafe premiums. The job site gets the right mix of skills at the right time to complete whatever stage of construction it is in. The employees you want return every day to keep continuity and workflow.  Your crew values the work they do and the pay, benefits and training they receive. There is no need to keep anyone “busy” while between phases and “due diligence” in your workforce is achieved by hiring the first C.O.R. certified labour company in B.C. Most importantly, you have the large labour pool to draw on, because even the largest developers can’t keep everyone busy all the time.

How do you pay your employees?

Our workers are treated and paid as employees, subject to the requirements of the Employment Standards of B.C. (Employment Standards Worksheet), WorksafeBC, and Revenue Canada (RevCan Bulletin). Wages are merit based, depending on skills, responsibilities, ability, certifications and longevity. No one will be sent out to your site without a quick review of the work to be done, and the rate of the individual to do the work. The price quoted is in effect until the completion of the phase, unless agreed to and noted before the commencement of work.

How does the training work?

Quolus employees with one year experience can participate in our industry related courses. We offer certified training for First Aid Renewals, Forklift, Hoist, Traffic Control, Skid Steer Loaders, and Carpentry Apprenticeships, as well as Whimis, and  Fall Protection.
